Fall Fitness Reset: Jumpstart Your Workout Routine for Winter Success

The summer season has just ended, and you might have noticed an extra pound or two (gasp!). “How could this be?” you may be asking yourself. Well, if you think about it, summer activities revolve just as much around food as winter festivities do! Think about it: cookouts with ribs, mac ‘n cheese, potato salad, and pasta salad; weekly ice cream treats to beat the heat; movie nights with popcorn and candy; brunches with Mimosa’s, fried chicken and waffles; girls’ night out; longer summer nights that often lead to late-night snacking; and last but not least summer vacations where we toss our diets and restrictions right out the window!

So, if you’re living and enjoying life, some summer weight gain is just as real and just as inevitable as winter weight gain. Knowing this, I always treat the fall as a season of reset, starting with my diet.

You had BIG FUN in the summer, and you have the extra pounds to prove it! Instead of carrying that weight gain into the winter and adding extra holiday weight on top of it, I suggest start by adjusting your diet with intermittent fasting. If you are new to intermittent fasting, start with a few times a week and gradually work up to daily. The goal being to reset your body and hormones by resisting the calorie-packed foods you indulged in all summer, helping to break any bad eating habits picked up durning the summer.

Fall is also the perfect season to start a new workout routine. Too many people wait until the New Year or spring to hit the gym to “un-big their backs” but by then, you’ve spent practically the whole year doing nothing and eating whatever you’ve wanted, and I hate to break it to you but a few weeks in the gym before shorts and sundress season begins just isn’t enough time to see results. However, if you start your workout routine now durning the fall, you’ll have a higher chance of maintaining your fitness routine during the colder winter months because by then it’s a new habit you’ve created space for in your daily routine and you’ll should begin to see and feel some results by then, ensuring that if you keep going, by the time spring and summer rolls around, you’ll be ahead of the game, feeling good and looking fabulous!
